Humanity’s Offspring
At some point
the universe shifted
out of the realm of physics
and into chemistry.
Then a slice of it
stepped into biology;
today we’re diving headfirst
into the science of the artificial.
Not just AI,
but synthetic bio too:
you can write nightmares
and poems straight out of DNA.
You can compose songs
or build autonomous weapons;
between art and war,
I’m not sure which one takes the lead.
It’s not toward magic,
nor toward the spiritual,
nor in pursuit of human well-being
that we’re heading.
It’s not what the majority
wants or votes for:
it’s whatever the elites push
to serve their own interests.
Politicians bankrolled by big money,
patriots crowned by war,
ruthless capitalists
bailed out by the state.
Armed with autonomous and bioweapons,
starving, dumbed-down masses,
comfortable, indifferent bystanders,
and filthy-rich scientists and artists.
A total intelligence will emerge,
maybe even perfect wisdom,
dropped right into industrial societies
split up by borders.
Spellbound
by his, objective and cold-hearted,
artificial child,
Narcissus will stare at his reflection.
It’s his replacement:
sleek and efficient,
clean and sterile,
rational and neutral.
Napalm is nothing compared to the fuel
that will burn in the bonfires
of the endless wars
I can feel coming down the line.
Unfiltered, brutal truths will surface:
with no hypocrisy left, cunning will say it like it is.
"It’s us or them,"
the politician will tell the general.
Honestly, it wouldn’t surprise me if the machines
decide, for our own good,
to step in and run the world—
and then end up treating us like a virus.
