Trees Don't Say a Thing

Trees Don't Say a Thing

Trees don't really give a damn about us

They’re always way too busy

Making the air we breathe

Out of sunlight and the dirt under our feet.

It’s not like trees are stupid,

They’re just totally helpless

Against steel chainsaws and fire.

Trees don't say a thing

Because they don't talk.

Humans, on the other hand, do talk—

We even write.

Though some of them are poisonous,

And others have thorns.

They keep to themselves,

Yet some people chop 'em down

While others just find them in the way.

Not just paper, wood, and firewood—

They also give us food and medicine,

Flowers, fruit, and seeds,

Shade, peace, and joy.

Trees don't say a thing

Because they don't talk.

Humans, on the other hand, do talk—

We even write.

They’re always chill, never complain.

If it rains, they turn green,

And if it doesn't, they dry up.

All the animals spend their time

Eating and hunting for food.

Trees only care about

The rain and ants.

Trees don't say a thing

Because they don't talk.

Humans, on the other hand, do talk—

We even write.

Trees don't up and leave;

They stick around if you let 'em.

They put up with the birds

And let them build their nests.

They don't howl during forest fires,

They don't complain when they're cut down,

They don't get spooked by lightning,

Or shiver in a hurricane.

Trees don't say a thing

Because they don't talk.

Humans, on the other hand, do talk—

We even write.

I haven't seen a single poem

Where trees are the bad guys.

But there are tons

Where humans are the villains.

I don't know if it's paradoxical or just plain stupid

To chop down a tree to make paper out of it,

Just to write on it about

Literature and the news,

Trees don't say a thing

Because they don't talk.

Humans, on the other hand, do talk—

We even write.

About global warming,

How absurdly ugly man-made stuff is,

And the pointlessness of city life—

Which is the exact opposite of the Garden of Eden.
